Olympic Games. Rowing: Gold Medals for Helen Glover and Heather Stanning.

FIRST GOLD MEDALS FOR TEAM GB

FIRST EVER BRITISH GOLD MEDALLISTS IN WOMEN’S ROWING

Helen Glover and Heather Stanning easily won the final of the coxless pairs today, in a time of 7.27.13 seconds. They were Team GB’s first gold medallists on Day 5, after four barren days, and the first ever to win gold in women’s rowing.

Helen, from Truro, only started rowing three years ago, after switching from hockey. She was spotted by talent hunters from Sporting Giants, for rowing, canoeing, volleyball and handball events. Sporting Giants was founded by Steve Redgrave in 2007.

Previously Helen had been a PE teacher. Before the race she said: "I haven't drunk any alcohol in two years, I haven't been on a night out, and I had to miss my grandma's 90th birthday”.

Heather Stanning, from Yeovil in Dorset, went to Gordonstoun then on to Sandhurst. She has been in the army since 2008, and luckily didn’t lose one of her rowing arms in a live-fire practice. She has served in Afghanistan.

An enthusiastic crowd including Princes William and Harry were there at Eton Dorney (beside their old school lake) to cheer the girls on.
