Robin Neale, 50, a Truro hairdresser, has just won first prize, the 1st Gold Star Award, for his Daywear style on salon apprentice Livvy Nash, 19, at the Salon International competition in London.  Livvy from Penryn is also a model in her spare time and there is no doubt that she could get to the very top. Fired up by their success Robin and Livvy are planning to enter the Art de Coiffure Show in Paris next year.

Talented brothers Robin and Russell both trained at the famous Robert Fielding salon in Regent Street, but decided to move down to Cornwall after family holidays in their childhood; they set up Russell Robin Hair Studio almost 28 years ago. Cornwall attracts the top people in many professions who come down here to settle.

It is a small world in London for top hairdressers and Vidal Sassoon did not forget his old friends Russell and Robin for his eightieth birthday at the Dorchester Hotel in 2008. Amy Winehouse asked Robin up to London to do her hair before a cabaret and rock band Depȇche Mode imported him to Milan. Hugh Scully of Antiques Roadshow, snooker player John Higgins, comedian Bob Bryden, and Midge Ure, the founder of Live Aid have all been customers. Show-business celebrities who come to The Hall for Cornwall seek the brothers out for their skills with their diamond-serrated scissors.

A Summer Talent by Russell Neale
Russell was also in the national news in May 2009 for writing Amazon’s best-seller in the humorous section, A Summer Talent, based on an Essex village. He is now writing the second book in the trilogy, and the series may well be televised.

In 2002 Robin featured on TV Ready, Steady, Cook and cooked Cornish mussels from Porthtowan in garlic sauce. Customers at the Truro salon are unsurprised by the success of Robin and Russell, which they thoroughly deserve. On the run-up to Christmas this year one satisfied customer brought them a brace of pheasant. Rambulation gives tribute with this article, and may go purple in the New Year.

A Summer Talent is available from Amazon, Russell Robin and local bookshops, priced £9.50.
