Camila Batmanghelidjh, Kids Company. AlexandAlexa. Global Kids Fashion Week 18-20 March 2013.

Camila Batmanghelidjh

This week is holding the first ever Global Kids Fashion Week of the latest children’s collections by Chloe, Paul Smith, John Galliano, Juicy Couture and other designers: all profits will be donated to Kids Company, a charity founded by Camila Batmanghelidjh in London in 1996. This is timely aid, as the government grant to the charity is due to end shortly.

Kids Company now has 600 staff plus 11,000 volunteers who provide emotional and educational support, food, shelter and clothes to as many as 18,000 children in centres in Southwark, Lambeth and Camden, as well as in 41 inner-city schools. The first Kid's Company outside London opened last month in Bristol.

Camila Batmanghelidjh was born in Tehran in 1963, and came to the UK in 1974. Last month she was awarded a CBE for her work with underprivileged children in London and was called one of the 100 most powerful women in the UK by Woman's Hour on BBC Radio 4.

Quite apart from her wonderful work with children Camila is known for her unique fashion sense, and could easily walk down the catwalk herself. "It takes me probably 5 minutes to get dressed. I don't think about it at all... But the way I dress matches my psychological energy, so when I get up in the morning I think 'What colour do I want to wear today?' and I just bung it on really quickly and get out. I don't worry about what people think at all... And it's instantaneous - I instantly know what fabrics go together and what doesn't - and it's just instinctive".

Google Images has many fascinating photographs of her colourful outfits. Camila was painted for the trustees of the National Portrait Gallery in 2005 in Madame Récamier style by Dean Marsh, who was awarded the BP Portrait award.
