The first ever Global Kids’ Fashion Week took place this week at Freemason’s Hall, Covent Garden, London, to great acclaim.  It was the brainchild of husband and wife Alex and Alexa Theophanous who sell children’s designer fashion online at alexandalexa.com.  Quite clearly the child models enjoyed wearing designer clothes on the catwalk in front of an audience of 200 people, including many celebrity parents. Doubtless the event will become an annual fixture.

All proceeds from the fashion show are being donated to Kids Company, which was founded in 1996 by psychotherapist Camila Batmanghelidjh for disadvantaged children in inner London.  This is timely help as the government grant to Kids Company from the Department for Education’s Voluntary and Community Sector runs out at the end of March 2013.

Kids Company helps vulnerable children and young people re-engage in education and employment at drop-in centres where they are given opportunities in the arts, sports and community work.  Qualified staff support young people with emotional and mental health problems, abuse, anger management, drug addiction, homelessness, crime, trauma, lack of food and clothing and many other issues.

Kids Company Urban Academy has had its own fashion label, Bare Thread since 2005,  where young people learn to design, make and market clothing.

Penguin Books commissioned Kids Company to write about the Victoria Line to celebrate 150 years of the London Underground. Mind The Child  is on sale in all book shops for £4.99.
