Investec Epsom Derby: Cheekpieces for Ruler of the World. Derby Fashions. Gypsies by Laura Knight.

Ruler of the World, winner of the 2013 Derby,
the first colt to win the race wearing cheekpieces,
(sheepskin ones) which settled the 3 year old down.

Investec Derby 1m 4f
Prize money  £782,314.

1 Ruler Of The World (R L Moore) 7-1
2 Libertarian (William Buick) 14-1
3 Galileo Rock (W M Lordan) 25-1

Ruler of the World was ridden by Ryan Moore and trained by Aidan O'Brien: he was the first horse to have won the Derby wearing cheekpieces, and he won resoundingly. Trainer's son Joseph O’Brien suggested Ruler of the World wore them for the Chester Vase which he duly won last month:  .“He won very nicely and we didn’t think there was any need to change what worked,” said Aidan O'Brien.

The Queen is always happy at the races

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh were there together with a large Saturday crowd. Princess Beatrice looked rather good in her jockeyish cloche hat. The day was fine and there was the usual fashion mix of what looked good and the opposite. Tall chunky heels were much in evidence, long and very short dresses.in bright colours were the norm.

Derby Day is always a great day out, though sadly the fairground is no longer where it should be, at Tattenham Corner: in 2009; it  was replaced  by a car park.

The centre of the course is traditionally a place for gypsies with their caravans and nowadays helicopters also land and park there. Caravans for sale can be viewed, and you have never seen such spotlessness, fine lace curtains and china heirlooms.

It is always a good idea to get to the course early and walk round it.
