Emmaus Cornwall's first charity shop in St Austell has been open for just over a year. Harry Potter chess set. Terry Waite.

The Emmaus shop in Aylmer Square in St Austell was opened just over a year ago
by Emmaus president, Terry Waite, on 29 November 2013

The Emmaus Cornwall committee had been working on this longed-for project for over five years, with the longer-term plan of raising sufficient match-funding to open the first Emmaus community in Cornwall, and provide much needed accommodation for those who are in the most acute need. Emmaus UK communities provide the homeless with a home, work and skills, as well as companionship.

The Emmaus Cornwall shop is open today for late night shopping till 8 pm, and its Facebook page announces it has a very rare Harry Potter chess set. "Don't miss out on a bargain, just £30, ebay is £50."  The shop.has a wide range of stock, including clothing, vintage fashion, bric-a-brac, crockery, glassware, collectables, records, CDs, DVDs, pictures, books and much more, including retro items. Donations for the shop are always needed and can be brought to the back of the shop by car or via the front. Emmaus Cornwall is keen to hear from enthusiastic, customer-focused volunteers with a flair for selling, even if they can only spare a few hours a week or month.
Cornwall has the third highest amount of rough sleepers in the country after Westminster and Newham. Official figures this time last year showed that Cornwall had more than 80 people sleeping rough at any one time.
Emmaus communities typically house 25 companions who are given full-time work as well as a home and the chance to rebuild their lives in a supportive environment. Companions learn new skills and regain their self-respect through working to support themselves and the community. They are given much-needed help with drink and drug addictions to get out of the downward spiral.  Their health improves with a regular routine: living and working with others forges strong bonds. There are currently 24 Emmaus communities around the UK and more are in development.
